Nice & Nasty have DAN CURTIN in Crawdaddy – Fri 15 Sept – and support comes from Desy Balmer, Miller and Asciinoid doing a live set.

There are two interviews with Dan: one in the current issue of The Event guide and the other on www.electronicireland.com if you go to http://www.electronicireland.com/audio/DanCurtin_ElectronicIreland_September2006.mp3 you can grab an exclusive mix by Dan.

I guess most people already know of his stuff and his close links to D1 and Americhord have made him a firm favourite of Irish audiences but from his early outings on NYC’s Strictly Rhythm and the UK’s Peacefrog to today’s stuff for Headspace, Delsin and Tuning SPork he has established himself as a proper techno legend both sides of the Atlantic. Anyway, its been a while since he played Let loose (Bodkins) and Model One (Traffic) so try and get down and check him out.

Doors open 11-30pm and adm is a tenner. Please pay into the Crawdaddy entrance (you also get access to the rest of the Pod (ground level anyway) and the regular 515 evening of house grooves but if you pay into the Pod you don’t get into us until the very end. A few people made this mistake at the last gig there (soma records party) and whilst it isn’t the end of the world its best for all to go in via Crawdaddy on these occasions.

On a different note, coming soon are: CJ Bolland, Colin Dale, Pure Science, Percy X, Marco Bernardi, Alex Smoke, Marco Lenzi and some others at either Radio City or Crawdaddy. Watch this space.
You often hear the term Legend bandied about DJs and Producers who really don’t deserve it. Dan Curtin, however, is a real, true techno legend. In fact there are some who would also class him among the legends of deep house and electro.
Curtin has been releasing records regularly since 1992 on some of the most esteemed labels. With 40 singles and 5 full-length albums under his belt, Curtin has recorded for legendary house label Strictly Rhythm, cult heroes Moody & Djax, Peacefrog, Ray Gun, Downlow and his own imprint Metamorphic; however recently he has released some of his finest moments on the UK’s premier labels, Headspace, Dust Science, Pnuma (Soma) and last but not least he did an EP for D1’s D1aspora and remixed Americhord, so he is not a stranger in a strange emerald land, but hhis is a rare opportunity to catch this globe trotting DJ and legendary pioneer of the hypnotic groove,. The Event Guide’s Desy Balmer caught up with him in his new home Berlin to find out more about Dan Curtin.
Can you remember the moment you fell in love with techno?
Yes. Summer 1988, just bought The House Sound of Chicago on Traxx records which way my first experience with artists like Adonis, Larry Heard, Hercules, and many of the Traxx pioneers. It was definitely a life changing moment, and the arrival of what I had been unknowingly searching for since the day I bought my first record.

Is there a person, a place or a chemical that motivates you?
In general things like forests, space, cities, and LSD, but musically, Kraftwerk, Marly Marl, Run DMC, Juan Atkins and almost every other house and techno originator from Chicago and Detroit.

The motivation to move forward every day only comes from inside as corny as that sounds. The other kind of creative motivation is all of the crap out there, **** boring artists, Residents in Chief, these things are a kind of a negative motivation, they motivate and inspire me to not be like that. Environmental catastrophes and war, these kinds of things inspire me to look deep into inner and outer space for a solution.

Who is making the best music right now?
Quince from Delsin is really impressing me, Luciano is always high quality, Jay Haze is making some of the sickest underground stripped down techno, and Diz from Chicago (Iz and Diz) is taking real house music forward.

What 5 tunes can you not live without?

It Is What It Is-Rhythm is Rhythm
The Man Machine-Kraftwerk
4 Jazz Funk Classics-69
Can You Feel it-Mr. Fingers
Black Mahogani-Moodyman

What do you think about technological changes to the culture of music?
Final Scratch is cool, no problems with that....Laptop "DJing" with a Abelton in place of decks is weak.

Well, house is and always has been about the technology and as long as technology allows for creative expressions of the human soul than I am interested in seeking out new gear. When technology allows the talentless to produce work that "sounds" professional but completely lacking in integrity, soul, and originality I get nervous because the saturation of the market with this musical drivel devalues all music. This is especially dangerous when trying to expose new people to this music because they are overwhelmed by low quality work from the start and consequently they don't have the ability to discern between what is good and what is bad.

Is there any DJ/Producer/Singer-songwriter you would love to work with?

I'd like to produce a track or album with Larry Heard and Madonna actually. Larry Heard because he has been such an inspiration to me over the years and because Madonna has much to offer when she is not being misguided by the wrong producers.

Dan Curtin plays Crawdaddy on Friday 15th September 2006. Support comes from Nice & Nasty’s Desy Balmer, Miller, Jamie Clarke of Produse and a live set by Asciinoid of Seedy-R records. Doors 11-30pm. Adm. €10/12 after midnight.
