hows it goin everyone. my name is will and i run the DIT DJ Society.im making this post to create some awareness and hopefully create some action with regard to DJ Societies.
i set up the society in 2001 as a fresher. im now heading into fourth year and i want to pass on my experiences over the last few years to hopefully see this take off.
with regard to music its probably the best thing iv ever done. iv overseen it grow from a one man gig to a full on movement and i have to say its been more than worth it. its highly rewarding to see something that iv set up be of such benefit to people.
When you think about it, a DJ Society is the perfect place for an individual to grow as a DJ amongst other things. you dont have the pressure of a big nightclub or promoter on your back so you can grow freely as a DJ. its worked for me and iv seen it work for people who've gotten involved. i barely knew how to beatmix when i set it up and only last year i was a runner up in the Heineken Thirst competition.
as regards things that we've got going we have a dj school, a weekly open decks night, trips away (Homelands), Parties and an annual DJ Battle (crucial).
There are loads of roles that a person can play in a DJ Society. Here's just a few for example.
1. DJ
2. Promoter
3. Manager
4. Tutor
5. journalist/reviewer
6. website manager
7. Communications Manager. Emails and txt msgs
So you dont even have to be a DJ to be involved. As Dave Mancuso said, everyone is equal and everyone plays their part. from the DJ right down to the person who takes in the coats.
There are plenty of people who are fed up of going to events that more resemble a cattle mart than an event. i call these "meat market gigs" This is where the DJ Society Comes in to provide an alternative.
If This Sounds interesting to you then make the first step. send me an email. get in touch (Especially If your in DIT, UCD or Trinity.). ask me questions cos anyone with the enthusiasm and their heart in the right place can do this. plus the experience you'll get is unique.
Good luck. You've nothing to lose so dont be afraid to just make it happen.
Take it easy.
