My favourite DJ's are Shane Johnson and Greg Dowling. I've seen them countless times(both individually and as a duo) and they never fail to impress, especially Shane. No-one plays house like him. Deep, Jazzy, funky and his mixing is the smoothest I've ever heard. I'd ahve to disagree with you aobut Morales though Conor. Any sets I've heard of his have just been straight up house. I'd say Francois K, Joe Claussell and Danny Krivit are probably the closest in style to Larry Levan, they play everything.

well im only speaking from experience.i have loads of morales mix cds and they are straight up house but the time i saw him he was very versatile playing the likes of barry white and diana ross alongside dj pierre and oliver lieb. i also have a tape of him live in pacha from 2001 and he varies the style nicely there aswell.i like danny krivit and francois k a lot aswell though and ive never seen them live but i have B&S 1,2,and 3 and Francois K essentail mix on ffrr and danny krivit mix the vibe and his grassroots one aswell and although they are all class i dont think thy vary there styles as muc they way levan does and they also tend to play real deep stuff but ive never heard anything similar on any of the levan mixes ive got.as for joe claussell im not a mad fan of his cos im not into all that latin afro beat stuff that he's big into playing

But there was no such thing as 'deep house' when Levan was alive, it only really started to appear later on, so you can't really compare to them. Have you ever seen Joe Claussell live?? He plays everything, from disco, to soul, to reggae, to house, I've even seen him play the doors and the beatles and pull it off. I can only go on what I've heard from Morales but I think the Body and Soul DJ's and Timmy Regisford are the closest in musical philosophy to Levan(ie play ANYTHING, regardless of genre). I could never imagine Morales playing the doors or Led Zeppelin or the beatles.

well in fairness i could never see levan playing the doors or the beatles or Led zeppelin (although trampled underfoot would work well on a dancefloor) as his tastes seemd to be very "black" music and that was the core of his sound although he would play the odd odd record(Manuel gottsching-e2:e4, van halen - jump, pat benatar - love is a battlefield) but it was all in context of the message he was trying to portray. anyway my point was that from what i know the body and soul lads tend to stick to a deep sound which IMO doesnt really fit in with the energy of underground disco and garage(eg Taana gardner - work that body and the strikers - body music) where as morales plays deep house (live anyway) amongst other styles and he was one of the few DJ's ive seen where there wasnt more than one record he played all night that i didnt like(Saffron hill - my love is always therebeing the exception)and he played for 6 odd hours, but i havent seen any of the body and soul lads live.were the B&S cds recorded live at the club?

Let the arguments begin.

Tim Delux:
I have seen him twice once in Spirit and once in the Tivoli and despite the cheese association that goes with his chart music he is a very gifted DJ He was hammering the **** out of the CDJ 1000

The B&S CD's weren't recorded live. If that's all you've heard from them, then you're not getting the entire picture. They regularly play lots of garage classics and are big into the garage sound. Francois K was a regualar there for years(I'm not sure about the other 2). I've heard Morales mixes from the last few years and I wouldn't classify it as deep house at all. I guess we'll just have to agree to differ. I just don't like a lot of the stuff Morales is playing for the last few years and I think it's very far from what Larry Levan played.

i just got that impression as in the second one on the second last track it winds down into the crowd screaming for one more tune over th mike beore you just hear abstract truth come in and although they could have recorde the crowd noises and blended them over the mix you can hear the feedback of the beats off the intro off the last record through the mike before it is switched off.well i accept that i havent seen the B&S DJ's live and you probably know more on them there than me.francois k and danny krivit were both close friends of levan and both played in the garage as guests and would be closer IMO than claussell who AFAIK didnt come out of the same scene as the aformentioned 2.As for morales the only reason i think that about his style is records which he has been playing recently like Milk & sugar - stay around,Kathy Brown - give it up, soulsearcher - feelin love, Frankie Knuckles & Jamie principle - back in the day and DJ Pierre - R U ready are all housey/garage style stuff but they would IMO easily fit into a levan set the garage. with regards to deep house i said he plays a few here and there but not too much but surprisngly enough theres a good bit of it on his mix the vibe cd that he did last summer

Maybe they are recorded live so. I always thought they were studio recorded. I only have them on vinyl anyway.

eric morillo--didnt tink too much of him til i seen him in october and was very very surprised, thought he was brilliant

derrick carter--rocked the redbox in june and his album is savage

james zabiela--seen him in prague bout 2 yr ago, didnt know much bout him then, but thought he was fucking fantastic

Who's everyones favourite DJ's and why?have justified this if and when you have seen them live?

Mine would be Larry Levan and David Morales. I've heard loads of tapes of Levan live at the garage and a few other clubs(Ministry, the choice, Endmax and Gold in Japan) and he is in a league of his own. Morales IMO is the only DJ who really comes close in terms of style to Levan and i saw him in spirit back in may and he was fuckin brilliant!

i went to morales in ibiza last year in pacha and he blew me away, one of the best nights i had over there.

laurent garnier-2 brilliant sets of his iv been to.his set in at the wp was set of the year for me in 2003.

Don't know if I could narrow it down to 2 or 3...but Hawtin, Rush, Liebing, Jacques Lu Cont, Adam Beyer, Marco Carola.
Never been disappointed by any of them yet....and have been some of my best nights.

Sorry, but Morales, only saw him once but was the worst set I've ever seen (it's a bit of a standing joke in Shine about how bad it was)....but each to their own and all that ;)
