Novadance: You're playing the Pod this time, as opposed to the large Redbox, where you've appeared more times than I can remember. Does this mean a departure from what we're used to, musically?
Nick Warren: I am really looking forward to it. Playing in a smaller room means you can experiment more, play deeper and bond with the crowd , I love it.
Last year saw the release of your sixth GU, Shanghai. But which of your mixes is four favourite? And why?
To be truthful I am only really happy with Shanghai. All the others have bits I am not happy with.
You admitted to listening to around three thousand tracks when researching
Shanghai- what did you get from listening to them?
I realised that most prog is boring. Get excited! That's the key!
What up and coming producers really caught your eye.I mean. ear?
Mercurio from Argentina [whose Simple Things features on disc 2], and Rowan and Jaytech from Australia were stand out producers.
Hardfloor feature on the mix- a bona fide classic in anyone's books. Do you think the music industry is such that potential 'classics'- tunes that will still be big in ten years time- tend to be discarded too quickly these days?
It will all be discarded! A digital file has no soul !
What tunes or producers of the last couple of years do you think will stand the test of time?
Layo and Bushwhacka rock, Editors will be big, and of course Sasha will smash it again!
What do you think of the Balance mix series? Is it a worthy competitor to GU?
I donメt really see it as competition, as long as the GU cds continue to be good
You said recently that your next Way Out West project will be called 'Tales of the Rabbit Monk'. What's the story behind the title?
I want to do some psychedelic thumping house music. That's basically the idea behind it.
Is it going to be a major departure from the type of stuff that was on Don't
Look Down?
Oh yes.
Do you still play out the likes of Intensify and UB Devoid?
Not really, I am very critical of my music.
Is it kind of ironic that a lot of producers these days are rediscovering the early Way Out West sound and adapting it- I'm thinking of the likes of James Holden and Nathan Fake here?
Welcome everybody! But seriously, the fact that I influenced people is the biggest complement you can get.
Are too many DJs playing electrohouse or whatever itメs called these days- following the herd in a way?
Yes !! Fucking idiots!
What labels are you really in to at the moment?
Ibadan , Hope and Traum Schallplatten are really doing it for me!
Any chance of dropping Acperience at the Pod?
Yes !
